The means of letting a user know where they are located within the structure of a web site and the method of enabling them to move around between pages within a web site.

nested table

A table contained inside a cell of another table.

non-traditional device

A gadget to browse the internet that is not a PC or laptop. This includes PDAs, mobile phones and Pacmates.

noscript

The HTML tag used to tell a browser what to show in place of a JavaScript if scripts are disabled.

one-button activation

Some assistive technologies will provide their users with one switch or button which is pressed to tab round pages and to activate links and other functions. The same button will be used to indicate whether to follow a link or to tab to the next link, whether to activate a function or not and even to indicate which letters to type in form fields and address bars.

onclick

A tag which says what will happen when a user clicks in a certain place with their mouse.

ordered list

A list which needs a specific order. A numbered list which is indicated by <ol></ol> tags.

organic listings

The listings provided for free by search engines. The main search results which are not paid for by advertisers.

page refresh

Reloading a web page to update the information. This can be set to happen automatically, for example on a news site that updates its headlines every so often or on a sports site providing up to the minute scores or can be done manually by the user.

page template

A pre-set generic web page that webmasters can use to help create new pages for their site. Most sites will have a template for each type of page on their site. For example, a product page, a category page, a shopping basket page.

page title

The text in the bar at the very top of the page, or the text read out when you first load a page, which describes the content you expect to find.

Parkinson's disease

A progressive illness affecting muscle control. People with Parkinson's disease often experience trembling, stiff muscles and have difficulty walking and problems with coordination.

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

A small, handheld computer which can serve as a digital diary and with which you can access the internet via bluetooth and often has an in-built mobile phone. PDAs will run light versions of Windows software such as Word and Excel.

physical disability

According to Harvard University, a condition which limits a person's ability to carry out important physical tasks such as walking, talking, speaking, breathing, etc. and which may make it hard for that person to take care of themselves without assistive technology or a helper.

plug-in

A program that runs on the user's computer which shows different types of content inside the web browser than could be seen without it. For example, the Flash plug-in allows users to view multimedia files and interactive menus.

pointer

An assistive technology attached to the user's head which uses sensors which when pointed at the monitor can control the mouse. The user generally uses this in conjunction with software that emulates a keyboard on the screen in order to type.

pop-up window

A new window which automatically opens and appears above the current window when you load a page or when you open a new link.

presentation

The visual appearance of the page.

puff and sip device

An assistive technology which is fastened to the head, allowing the user to either blow into a tube or sip on it to indicate an action and which acts as a switch or one-button activation device.

Able to determine or express the amount of something.

radio button

Radio buttons are round buttons in a form which are provided in groups of two or more. Normally only one radio button can be checked at a time.

readability

Describes how easy it is for users to read and understand the text on your website.

readability index

A measure of how simple text is. A readability index uses a mathematical formula to work out the reading level a person would need to understand a document or web page.

render

To take the HTML or XHTML code for a web site and make it appear on the screen as intended.

report
