Image Maps Access Keys Criterion

Provide redundant text links if using server side image maps. Make certain to provide alt text for every hot spot on client side image maps.

• When using sever side image maps if you click on the hot spot the server holds the destination of this address. This poses problems for screen readers which do not know where the link goes. This means users will not know either.
• Each section of an image map providing a link needs an alt describing the destination. Users browsing without graphics or using a screen reader can then see where links lead. The overall image should also have alt text explaining it is an image map and what its purpose is.
